Northern Star Series: Production Number 2, Large

This unique, hand-crafted accessory box is the perfect place to store watches, jewelry and other treasures. Built from a variety of gorgeous woods, this is a piece you can be proud to display for years to come.

This heirloom box is one of the Northstar Series, crafted from Paduak, Honduran Mahogany, Eucalyptus, Quilted Maple and Black Walnut. The top is not a veneer; it is built using the intarsia technique, where solid pieces of wood are cut precisely to fit to each other like pieces to a puzzle. This makes for a much more durable piece and will last for a lifetime. The grain in the Quilted Maple is aligned to present a radiant background to the points of the star. The legs are sculpted Eucalyptus, and I’ve coved the sides to take advantage of Paduak’s dramatic color. The interior and the lift-out tray are upholstered with tan suede and divided with Honduran Mahogany. The lid is attached with fine Brusso 95º stop brass hinges.

As a firm believer in building things to last, I’ve built this box to withstand the tests of time. It is treated with three coats of linseed oil and tung oil, and hand-finished with a light coating of shellac to keep the piece vibrant. Padouk is a gorgeous wood, and I think you will be as fascinated as I am by the subtle changes in color you will see as it ages. As all fine furniture ages, it darkens. Eventually, the Padouk will mature to a dark, dark red color.

This signed and numbered box is approximately 10 inches long, 8 inches wide and 5 inches tall. The lid is approximately 10-1/2 inches long by 8-1/2 inches wide and has been tapered from the center out. It is the perfect size to live atop a bedside table, bookshelf or dresser. I am proud to have built it and I hope that you will be proud to display it.

Northern Star Series : Production Number 2, Small

This is a design that I came up with a few years ago and have come to call it the Northern Star series.

It's produced from a variety of wood species ranging from Paduak, Honduran Mohagany, Eucalyptus, Figured Maple (also known as Quilted Maple) and Black Walnut. The star top is solid wood through and through; each piece cut to fit one another like a big puzzle using techniques from a woodworking practice known as intarsia (learn more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intarsia). I have aligned the grain in the Quilted Maple to give a radiant background to the points of the star...the tops are not a veneer and as such the entire piece is much more durable and will last for a lifetime. The Mahogany sides have a dramatic cove that flow into the sculpted Paduak legs, giving the piece life. The interior is divided with Black Walnut and upholstered in a rust/red suede to cushion and protect your treasures. The lid is attached with quality Brusso 95* stop brass hinges

The box is approximately 10-1/2 inches long, 8-1/2 wide and 3-3/4" inches tall. The lid is approximately 11 inches long by 9 inches wide and has been tapered from the center out, giving it a light and airy feel.

Northern Star Series : Production Number 1

The primary woods are Quilted and Tiger Maple, Mahogany, Black Walnut and American Cherry. It is trimmed in Black Walnut, Cocobolo and Cocobolo legs. The piece was our first production as a men's catch-all. Knowing that we would be targeting our male audience it became clear that a masculine and appealing design was needed. The design was inspired by our vast Western skies here in Utah.

The piece was a challenge to produce, with hand-planing and shaping the star points taking the majority of production time. The Quilted maple top pieces are cut to order the flow of the grain into one continuous motion, highlighted by a slight curl in the Cherry star points. The interior is lined with moose suede leather. The dividers and lift out tray are made from 1/8" mahogany strips, giving a variety of storage options. It is finished with multiple coats of Sam Maloof's Poly/Oil finish and topped with several coats of Sam Maloof's Oil/Wax, polished to a satin finish that begs to be touched. The piece is approximately 9" wide by 7" deep by 4" tall.

This piece currently resides with a collector in Sweden.
